Lecture 4: race, colonialism, and conflict: racism and colonial. First phase of european colonials: referred to as age of discovery , the spanish begin to colonize -the caribbean, mexico, southern portions of usa, Central and south america: portugal ruled over brazil, race developed in context of european exploration and conquest, europe relatively weak continent at the time. %1: mercantilism phase: early modern european economic and political system focused on trade monopolies between states and their colonies, accumulation of wealth. Types of colonies: colonies of settlement: Foreigners immigrated and sometimes became majority of the population of the territory (canada, usa) Indigenous people displaced through treaty, conquest or disease and depopulation. Most of the time colonists didn"t live in the colonies. Colonies mostly treated more as sources for wealth: colonies of exploitation: Territory used for resources, wealth, labor, markets, and/or strategic location. Goals of colonialism: wealth, resources, land, labour, taxation, markets, geopolitics.
