22 views5 pages

Document Summary

Anthropologists believe that collective acts of aggression and violence are culturally constructed (created by the culture which we live) (promoted by world views) In some societies, acts of violence are deemed necessary for constructing a sense of hegemonic masculinity or dominant cultural ideas of maleness. Highlighting hegemonic masculinity (dominant mainstream form of masculinity in society) = not the same in every culture. Male prestige or respect is won on the battlefield and shown in acts of bravery (in horse raids or battle) against the enemy. Violence is rewarded = respect from tribe and through leadership. Counting coup = happens in battle and certain actions are particularly brave (i. e. riding up close to enemy on horse and poking them with a coup stick); record points on coup sticks (stealing horses = masculinity) Stories of male bravery are re-told in pictorial representations (narrative art) and in oral histories.
