By the start of the 19th (cid:272)e(cid:374)tu(cid:396)(cid:455), half the (cid:449)o(cid:396)ld"s population was no longer rural. The growth of western civilization and the ravages of world war i led to a variety of issues. Scientists began to divide the world into different races. As the 19th century wore on, different races were given different races somewhat arbitrarily. The important point of racism in the first half of this century was that it was understood as a scientific property. And it was taken into politics, which was quite a dangerous mix. Into this came darwinism and the idea of the survival of the fittest. Given the law of nature that different races and species fought one another, conflict began to brew. Many critics argued that this was a misinterpretation of darwin. The metaphor of racial struggle made a lot of sense to people (cid:449)ho did(cid:374)"t look too deepl(cid:455) i(cid:374)to it.
