Back to the middle ages when we had the peasants, the nobles and the priests, who those laboured and resented, those who ate off the spoils and fought, and those who prayed and sided with both. This was feudalism, the great chain of being. Not only did society consist of a hierarchy, but so did the entirety of nature, the leader of this hierarchy being god, himself. The heavens were perfect, the earth, not so much. The very top subject in this new institution was theology, all of society, all of the learning and subjects were understood within this framework of theology.
