Body doesn"t store protein like it stores carbohydrates and lipids muscle as energy. But during periods of prolonged starvation, the body will draw on the protein found in. Atp is the energy currency of the cell. It is broken down to apd and inorganic phosphate (pi), while releasing free energy that dries certain reactions or processes inside the cell. Fuel preference varies with the tissue and energy demands. Muscle loves glucose during high intensity exercise, lipids at rest or low intensity exercise. Breakdown of macronutrients is referred to as catabolic process, or catabolism. Large more complex molecules are broken don into smaller simple compounds like carbon dioxide. Ex. glycolysis and the citric acid cycle.
