BIOCHEM 2EE3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Chon, Phosphodiester Bond, Carboxylic Acid
Document Summary
Condensation reactions link monomers together to produce polymers (results in the production of water) Nucleic acids consist of phosphate, ribose/deoxyribose, a nitrogenous base (adenine, guanine, thymine, cytosine, uracil) Rna contains a 2" oh group on ribose and dna lacks an oxygen on the 2" carbon on deoxyribose. The 5" phosphate causes dna/rna to be negatively charged. The 1" carbon on ribose/deoxyribose contains a nitrogenous base (dna contains thymine whereas rna contains uracil), adenine binds with thymine (2 hydrogen bonds), guanine binds with cytosine (3 hydrogen bonds) The 5" phosphate group of one nucleotide binds to the 3" oh group of another nucleotide (phosphodiester bond) to produce a double helix. Nucleic acids contain all the elements (chnops) except for sulfur. Consist of an amino group, carbon, hydrogen, carboxyl and 20 side chains (each amino acid possesses different properties) A peptide bond occurs between the amino group and the carboxyl group in order to produce water.
