BIOCHEM 4M03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Hypotension, Headache, Bradycardia
Document Summary
Biochem 4m03 lecture 14 nutrition & metabolism: ergogenic aids. Last lecture: example of a micronutrient in metabolism. Retinoids: animal source of vitamin a: certain carotenoids: plant source of pre-vitamin a. Ingestion of vitamin a: metabolized in the gut enterocytes, transported to liver. Liver: storage, direct actions, systemic transport, excreted. Retinoic acid: nuclear hormone receptors, dna transcription. Given 3 examples today: creatine, caffeine, beta2 agonists. Supplement or nutritional aid will fit in between nutrient and metabolic process. Performance enhancement sport: can take a lot of forms, not just for sport. Mechanical: any equipment or device that aids in performance. Psychological: hypnosis, visualization, meditation, preparation rituals. Physiological: manipulating endogenous system, manipulating what"s already there, blood doping, acupuncture/physiotherapy, massage. Pharmacological: anabolic steroids, growth hormone, testosterone, pain killers, beta blockers, beta agonists, amphetamines. Beta blockers slows heart rate, reduces blood pressure used in sports such as golf, archery (taken to manipulate body to do different things)
