Under favourable conditions and available nutrients, all cells have the essential machinery that favours growth and division. All prokaryotes require the essential nutrients that are important for growth and cell division. Some prokaryotes will also grow best at favourable temperatures. However, they may need to adapt to whatever is available. This is where gene regulation becomes important to help prokaryotes respond to their environment. Dna in a bacterial nucleoid contains the info required to orchestrate a response to any change in their environment. Some dna contains genes required all of the time for normal functions. Other genes can be turned on and off on an as needed basis. Are constitutively expressed (always being transcribed and translated) Includes genes that are important for structural proteins of the cell (rna and dna polymerases) and genes that are coding for ribosomal proteins. Allow for constant maintenance of general cellular activities.
