Document Summary
Theme 1 applied lecture 2 understanding cystic fibrosis. Most common fatal genetic disease (1/3600 children born in canada) Many effects on body but mostly digestion and lungs. Higher prominence in people from european countries. Persistent cough reflex of lungs to get rid of mucus. Wheezing, shortness of breath not enough airway. Chest infections and/or pneumonia due to bacteria not being where its supposed to be. Chronic persistence and bacterial infections, destruction of lungs leads to death. Airways widened of the airways but narrow area where air can pass. Liver duct (secreting bile) that normally helps with digestion will be clotted. Pancreatic duct is clotted (makes insulin, enzymes, etc. ) resulting in nutrient deficiency. Build up of mucous in reproductive organs has complications leading to male infertility. Normal individuals still have a little bit of mucous in their trachea. Cystic fibrosis patients have a lot of inflammation, irritation (see a lot of redness and vasculature), buildup of mucous.
