BIOLOGY 1M03 Lecture 15: Lecture 15 (Feb 7th)
Document Summary
Questions are based on material discussed in class. Questions emphasize comprehension, interpretation, and application of concepts. Evo-devo: switches and gradients, genetic toolkits, complexity versus gene number, hox genes. Gene and genome duplication: nonfunctionalization, neofunctionalization, subfunctionalization, redundancy (duplication delivers more with same function) Hominoid (ape) diversification in time and space; social systems. Evolution of key features: pelvis, teeth, skull, locomotion. Human evolution in its entirety began with the origin of cellular life ~3. 8 billion years ago. Here we will focus on a very recent portion of this history when mammals were present: the time from our shrew-like insectivorous ancestors scurried through leaf litter in forests ~180 million years ago until the present. The cenozoic era (65 million years ago present) saw spectacular radiation of mammals, following the extinction of dinosaurs. This was coupled in time, and probably linked to the diversification of angiosperm (flowering) plants. Angiosperms are a type of vascular plant that have flowers.
