When female is fertile, male can tell by urine tasting. Males fight to win access to reproduction privileges. Longer necks win battles, meaning they reproduce so more often selected. Eusocial & fossorial: one female breeds with 1-3 males & most individuals are support staff (working, not breeding) If queen dies, female fight to death to become new queen, causing body to go through morphological changes. Highly inbred (although some do migrate) but does not seem to adversely affect them. Community latrine: undergrown burrows, used by all, rolling in the feces of the latrine, because they roll around in it, they can tell who is part of colony. Do naked mole rats actually roll in feces as a way of identifying others from their group: clean off scent & reintroduce. Keep as many variables as possible constant (same source of meat for maggot experiment, same population of giraffe for feeding assay)
