Middle of chapter 24 - examples and evolution. Hypothesis: giraffes have long necks to provide access to food resources. Prediction: giraffes should eat food at high heights. Turns out that giraffes usually don"t extend their necks during feeding. Alternative hypothesis: giraffes evolved long necks because longer-necked males win more ghts than shorter necked giraffes, and can then father more offspring. Many giraffes die in these ghts and it has been seen that giraffes with long necks win. Could studying giraffes inform our understanding of extinct species? (other long neck animals) Eusocial and fossorial: one female in the colony breeds with 1-3 males (queen has about 900 babies), and most individuals (male and female) spend their entire lives in the colony (20-300 individuals) working and not breeding. If the queen dies or is removed from the colony, females may ght to the death to become the new queen.
