Document Summary

May need to extract and purify protein for things such as studying the. 3d structure of the protein with x-ray crystallography. May wa(cid:374)t to ide(cid:374)tify the protei(cid:374)(cid:859)s function, what are its substrates and what does substrate binding do. There are 7 steps in isolating proteins from a cell because there are thousands of other proteins in the cell: protein assay. A method of detecting a protein that is designed specifically to the protein. The assay must be specific to the protein so that it can detect it and measure its concentration. An example of being specific: if you are trying to detect a protein, you can use its antibody to dete(cid:272)t the protei(cid:374)(cid:859)s prese(cid:374)(cid:272)e (cid:271)y (cid:373)easuri(cid:374)g its (cid:272)ha(cid:374)ges i(cid:374) (cid:272)o(cid:374)(cid:272)e(cid:374)tratio(cid:374) with a(cid:374)d without an antibody: protein source. In order to receive the greatest amount of the protein, you must choose a source that makes sense.
