BIOLOGY 2B03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Adherens Junction, Tight Junction, Gap Junction
Document Summary
& connected by plasmodesmata: communication thorugh plasmodesmata = trafficking of informational macromole (transcription factors, gene transcripts and small rnas), viral pathogens use these channels for intercellular spread. Adherens junction or cams (4 fam: cadherins, ig-superfamily, integrins and selectins: some resp for hemophilic interactions (similar cells), other connect diff cells (heterophilic interactions, cadherins (ca dependent cams for homo interactions) 3 class: e (epithelial), n (neural), p (placental) Junctions b/t epithelial cell-cell adhesion below tight junctions. Multiprotein complex: transmembrane cadherins, cutosolic cofactors, catenins (anchor cadherins to actin cytoskeleton) +gfp into culture cells & cells mix tgt in ca medium and can see aggregation of e (adhesion and junction at surfaces of neighbouring cells) Adhesion b. t these cells prevent leakage of cells out of the blood vessels. Norm leukocytes move quickly w/ red blood cells in flow of blood through vessels and must establish temp connections w/endothelial cells in order to mediate the process of extravasation and get to infection.
