Document Summary

19 patterns of terrestrial primary production time. Primary production: the fixation of energy by autotrophs in an ecosystem. Rate of primary production: is the amount of energy fixed over some period of. Gross primary production: is the total amount of energy fixe by all the autotrophs in the ecosystem, independent of any costs associated with either energy fixation or basal metabolism of the organisms. Net primary production (npp): is the amount of energy left over after autotrophs have met their own energetic needs. Npp is gross primary production minus respiration by primary producers and is the energy available to the consumers in an ecosystem. In most systems, npp is the difference between photosynthesis and respiration. Trophic level: is a position in a food web and is determined by the umber of transfers of energy from primary producers to that level. Primary producers occupy the 1st trophic level since they convert inorganic forms of energy into (mainly light) into biomass.
