The jurassic mother of us all is the juramaia, 160 mya. Prior to the 70s, the theory was that as animals evolve their genes become consequently different as well. King and wilson published a paper in the 70s and found that the amino acids that make up proteins were similar in chimps and humans (a large percent was similar between both species). Its not that the genes are different rather the regulatory mechanisms are different. Huge diversity in form in shape, some have big form for defending colony, etc. Difference can be accounted for by genes, also some evolution of new genes to allow for diversification to be expanded. Cellular level: basic biochemistry, the krebs cycle etc. is very similar. We can learn what the conserved units are and understand diversity from a conserved" grounding, allowing for a unifying framework. Original idea: mammals arose from jurassic period, i. e. a small rodent ancestor.
