Material culture is obtained through excavation: digging, recording. Features: fixed objects that cannot be easily removed from a site (e. g. buildings, carvings, graves, walls, heaths, drains, shrines, kilns, structures [temples, houses, amphitheatres]) Artifacts: small objects that can be moved (pottery, coins, glass, metal, bone tool, some sculptures) Context: the association of artifacts & features found within a particular area or layer, & the relative position & relationship of the area or layer to the ones above it & below it.
