Only about 3/5 of the city of pompeii has been excavates and only 2000 people have been found out of the estimated population of 20,000. Up to the 1850 pompeii hadn"t really been dug up. Technique of drilling into these shapes and pouring plaster into the hole. Pyroclastic materials crack away and the plaster mold of the body. In the 1970s and 80s people stopped using plaster and began using epoxy resin (using the same drilling and pouring technique used with plaster)
