Book 17: return to the palace still in disguise. Argus dies as soon as he recognizes his master after waiting all this time. He is disguised as a beggar and is treated horrible. First one to recognize odysseus is his very old dog. Odysseus" resourcefulness, endurance; passing along to his son. She recognizes the past description of him. Weapons are put away and the nurse locks away are the slave girls. Odyssey is about telemachus just as much as odysseus. Slaves are raised in the household (by a very young age) Penelope is powerless as a woman of the household. Telemachus can think on his feet, just like his father. The slaves girls have been sleeping with the suitors. The slaves have no rights or recourse (grim reality that their lives would"ve been easier if if they didn"t make enemies with suitors) Penelope asks typical questions to odysseus (refuses to reveal identity) Penelope reveals how hard her life has become.
