The people who settled attica chose a strategic spot. Attica: region surrounding athens, large area for a polis, large agricultural plains, fertile land, good mineral resources, the land of attica is mined greatly for silver, natural harbours. Elected by the masses eligibility was restricted to nobles: eupatridai, (cid:862)those of good fathers(cid:863) Areopagus (hill of acres): council of the areopagus, elder aristocrats, composed of former archons, deliberative body, high court of early athens. Important social group: marriages, ritual passages, warfare. Early stasis at athens: conspiracy of cylon (c. 632 bc, archaic tyranny, cylon, former olympic champion, son-in-law of theagenes, tyrant of megara, seizure of the acropolis, archon megacles (alcmaeonid clan, curse of the alcmaeonids. Inscribed laws: penalties for specific crimes publicized: reputation for extreme harshness: death, death, and more death, same penalty for stealing a vegetable as stealing a sacred object from a temple or for murder.
