Meeting place on the hill sacred to ares (greek war god) Former archons comprised the council of the areopagus. Ekklesiawas made up of citizens (free, male, landowners) Possible that the assembly elected the archons, but we are unsure of their actual role during the archaic period. Citizen families in attica belonged to 1 of 4 tribes (phylai) & to another smaller group within their tribe, phratry(brotherhood) Phratries concerned with matters of family & descent. Membership in phratry symbolized that you were in fact an athenian citizen. Clans (genos, gene): several households dominated by a top oikos, claimed descent from a common ancestor i. e. oikos --> genos --> phratry. A non-elite family could have belonged to a genos, but as subordinate members. Cylon escaped, but supporters surrendered to the archons.
