At the same time, fans" mindless devotion to star wars also seen as typical of all audiences" relationship to mass entertainment culture. Critique of mass culture and mass audiences, after all, portrays audiences as mindless, blind, and dumb consumers: adorno says we are all mindless not just fans. So fans can and have been constructed as both exceptional and exemplary audiences. Growing number of scholars have demonstrated that fandoms are more sophisticated than we often allow and therefore can tell us something important about audiences and their relationship to media. Above all, reconsidering fans and fandom challenges notion of mass audience as complacent object of media industries.
