Technology entails the activities, equipment and knowledge necessary to turn organizational inputs into desired outputs. Three well known classifications of technologies: degree of routineness, degree of interdependence, degree of production process. As exceptions go up, technological routineness goes down: a key factor is technological interdependence, the extent to which organizational subunits depend on each other for resources, such as resources or information"s. Thompson was concerned with how the bodies within an organization are connected and work together: pooled interdependence: organizations subunits are dependent on pooled resources (but otherwise independent) ex. Bank branches, faculties of mcmaster: sequential interdependence: organizational subunits are dependent on the resources generated by units that precede them in a sequence of work. Assembly line: reciprocal interdependence: organizational subunits must engage in considerable interplay and mutual feedback to accomplish a task. Hospital: with the increase of interdependence, there arise 3 problems.
