EARTHSC 1G03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Oceanography, Brushed Dc Electric Motor, Continental Drift
Document Summary
Earth has an atmosphere, earth has an active core (mercury doesn"t) We have activity going on the earth"s surface (that"s why it looks different from mercury) Our partially liquid core means we can have movement of continents - plate tectonics. The crust and uppermost rigid part of the mantle form the: lithosphere (lithic - solid, made of rock) The asthenosphere comprises: mobile part of the mantle (asthenosphere - plastic material) Earth"s surface is divide into a series of large plates that move around allowing continents to change position. Have moved, changed position over time (as they"ve moved they"ve carried the continents over time) Alfred wegener (1912) published ideas on continental drift. Wegener suggest continents moved by plowing through sea floor - didn"t know about the earth"s structure (the asthenosphere - whole theory was dismissed by scientists) We now know the continents are just floating on these plates. Distribution suggests southern continents formed single landmass in the past.
