EARTHSC 1G03 Lecture 10: Earthquakes
Document Summary
When you look at faults in a specific area, they all have the same sense of motion (therefore, the same stress). *seismic wave velocities are dependent on the elastic properties and densities of the rocks. P waves travel fast through rocks and liquids, whereas s waves don"t travel through liquids at all since liquids cannot support shear stress). S waves do not penetrate beyond 2900 km depth. A seismograph is the instrument used to record seismic waves. A seismogram is the actual record of the seismic waves, produced from the seismograph. Remember that seismic waves travel at different speeds. The weight will react and the entire frame will move up. The weight will take a little longer to react to record the vibration on the frame. The size of those variations tells you how much things are moving around: most of the time, you get little movements. You will never get a straight line on the record.
