EARTHSC 1G03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Subduction, Expanding Earth, Lithosphere
Document Summary
From rocks we can reconstruct how far poles were and in which direction. To get them into the same pattern, have to swing up the continents. In world war 2, an american scientist gathered the data that we needed. Bounce back up, tells how deep it is. In the 50"s urge to explain because of what they found was great. The picture they came up with had so much high and low points, had to be some explanation. North america to africa; had a mountain range. In the middle there is always a v, a valley at the highest point. The plates that covered the earth are pulling apart. These are hot, they are volcanos, got fluids coming out and magma (melted rock) North america includes part of the ocean, part of our plate, rocks that belong to us. Why atlantic is getting bigger, has more materials, getting more crust, magma comes up and freezes.
