EARTHSC 2GG3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Continental Crust, Oceanic Crust, Outer Core
Document Summary
Lecture 3 notes: earth is layered and dynamic, the internal structure of earth can be considered in two fundamental ways, by composition (what is it made of), state (liquid or solid), and density, by strength. The oceanic crust is denser than the continental crusts the denser material goes under the less dense material. The earth is made of the inner core, outer core, mantle, and crust. The mantle travel times for pathways indicate that seismic waves travel faster deeper they penetrate the mantle. P-waves travel considerably more slowly in the core than in the mantle and s-waves. Lithosphere and asthenosphere: lithosphere, cool, strong outermost layer of earth, asthenosphere, constitutes all but the uppermost part of the mantle, hot slowly flowing layer of relatively weak rock.
