EARTHSC 2GG3 Lecture 8: LANDSLIDES Oct 26
Document Summary
Lecture 6 landslides and land subsidence: forces on a slope, vajont dam landslide, frank slide, land subsidence. Fall: rocks brought down by pull of gravity. Slide: slab of soil will slide on another layer of soil. Slump: cross diagonal movement in diferent layers of soil. Creep: more gradual, starts at surface then layers underneath go too, trees become bent. Downslope ground movement is natural part of landscape evoluion. May start at gradual process, then mass will roll/slide downhill. Can be catastrophic in terms of volume of material falling. Any places that have signiicant slopes and mountains. Any area which there is increasing urbanizaion which gradually moves closer to slopes. Global climate paterns changing more precipitaion (bringing more moisture that leads to collapse of soil) Muliple factors contribute to increase landslide acivity. Major landslide disasters increase with: growth in populaion in dangerous areas. Timber harvesing in steep areas can lead to increased rate of erosion.
