The idea of nature is focused on external nature. Previous to this time nature was human nature but later it becomes how nature is separated from the human. There is a strong difficulty to master the natural world. Looking at animals to look at human nature. Once humans are no longer the rational or dominant then that changes our position in the world. There was a lot of visible animal cruelty like bear baiting. The enjoyment of animal cruelty is found problematic. Language becomes a crucial test to know if something has reason. Animals don"t have the same souls as humans" b/c they don"t have reason. Dogs showing something that is similar to reason. Showing how people who are cruel to animals lack empathy.
