GEOG 1HB3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Topological Map
Document Summary
Space: areal extent (amount of space on earth"s surface: absolute space: objective, physically real, with measurable extent and definable boundaries. Key for map-making, description & analysis (explanation) of spatial distribution. Mathematical projections: relative space: subjective/perceptual and variable over time. My perception of mcmaster = relatively small vs someone else might think it"s ginormous. E. g. apartment/house shopping, the real estate agent might say the place is cosy but cosy is code for small. Locations identified by their relative positioning & importance. In topological maps, scale, distance & positioning are guesstimates. E. g. toronto subway map (we only need to know what comes next not how the routes actually moves, turns and curves. Location: refers to a particular position in space. September 11, 2017 - lecture #2: absolute (mathematical) location: Latitude and longitude coordinates using an arbitrary mathematical grid i. e. 80w, 43n. A short drive from downtown, or adjacent to cootes paradise etc.
