Has a recent history compared in terms of european contact in comparison to the rest of. Canada? it was first settled (by europeans) in the late 19th century whereas eastern canada was settled in the early seventeenth century by the french. It maintains a crucial position in canada, as it is a link to the pacific rim nations, however it also holds a marginal position, as this region is physically and psychologically isolated from the rest of canada. There is a perception of almost limitless resources in this region. there are also many environmental challenges with the clear-cutting of forests including erosion, stream sedimentation, damage to salmon and spawning grounds. One interesting aspect of the province of british columbia is that it functions as its own little. Heartland/hinterland microcosm, with vancouver and victoria as its heartland, and the rest of the province as the hinterland.
