Announcements: on last class (december 2nd) will go over each answer of the midterm. This will not be as slides but a discussion. related to arid climate: pressure on water resource from climate warming and increased population and industry. Environmental challenges: drought and other hazards, disposal of radioactive waste from abandoned uranium mines before it seeps into lake. Oil sands: oil sands introduction, oil sands scale, oil sands production technologies, oil sands challenges. 1938 abasand commercial production - 2,500 barrels destroyed by fire in 1941 - not rebuilt. 1950"s separation technology centrifugal force: strong interest results in dozens of exploration leases sold by the government. 1964 esso starts cold lake; great canadian oil sands limited (gcos) construction begins. 1993 truck and shovel technology adopted: key to revitalizing the development outlook. Where are the oil sands deposits: athabasca in ne alberta, cold lake in e-central alberta; and, peace river in nw alberta.
