GEOG 3LT3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Allen Road, Urban Sprawl, Complete Streets
November 23, 2016
- He started the class by looking at how freeway development changed the
structure of cities
- Changes in Rochester
oThere is less density due to the freeway
▪This may be because once you have the freeways the downtown
becomes a less desirable place to live
▪There may not be the need for people to live downtown as with cars
they can get to the downtown easily.
▪The density may be reduced as there needs to be more space for
parking cars
•Parking lots make the region even less attractive for
residents
•Plus now land is becoming more expensive because
businesses are trying to get space for parking lots, so it is
more expensive to live downtown
•This creates the conditions for urban sprawl – people move
outward because it is cheaper
- Boston
oThe city cores have been hollowed out by the development of freeways
New Direction in Freeway Development (1940s)
- Here he kind of bounced around a bit sorry if it seems kind of all over the place
but that is how it was!
- They are designed to increase accessibility regionally
- They are not meant to be used locally
- Small local governments could not afford to build freeways
oSo they often had to look to the state or federal government for money
oHowever, the desires of small government do not always align with the
desires of the larger arms of the government
