Document Summary

The triangular voyages: ships left from england, stocked with goods, arriving in the west. The slaves boarded the ships and were transported to america, and were sold to american colonists, while the english ships went back home with money/tobacco/north american goods. Slaves were bought from african middleman; english slave traders did not capture slaves. The ashanti and dahomey tribes acted as the middlemen between the english and the slaves. Slaves were made to walk for months to the west african coast to reach the english slave markets. On the boats to america, slaves were kept in tight order, with mixed ethnicities to prevent them from organizing a rebellion. Ship crews were all armed and often double in size to keep order. Conditions on the ships were appalling and inhumane, many slaves died on the trip or committed suicide. Violence was central, it was the only solution to force the slaves to work.
