40 bce: antony and octavian(cid:495)s marriage alliance and division of the world. Antony had to marry octavian(cid:495)s sister, octavia to validity their alliance. Octavian was given the name augustus- as an honour. He was going to be a consul every year though. With their three sons and the son cleopatra had with julius caesar. Antony handed over a number of provinces to cleopatra. That antony was abandoning rome by giving away territory to become a king with his egyptian ptolemaic wife. His propaganda was showing that antony was a betrayer. 30 bce: deaths of antony (fell on his sword), cleopatra (took a poisonous asp to her bosom) and caesarion dispatched) 1st settlement of 27 bce: annual consulship, and provinces of spain, gaul, cilicia, Cyprus, syria, and egypt for 10 years (legates- deputy to each of these rebellious states) 2nd settlement of 23 bce: he resigns consulship (open to election for senators) and takes proconsular role.
