Question of the lecture: how did the republic impose its new authority. The constitution was brought forth to tame the democratic spirit of the people. Federalists were supporters of the constitutions and anti-federalists did not support this. The anti-fed/s wanted the states to keep their sovereignty with no direct power above them. Many of the americans were afraid of the powers of the president, they saw him as a new monarch/a new king george. There was claims of an aerostatic constitution and calls for annual elections. The federalists had to hide their elitism in their rhetoric, i. e. we the people>one group of people>one constitution>one form of government (trying to get their federal constitution passed. John jay, alexander hamilton, james madison three key federalists who pushed for a constitution. They wanted a strong government and a commercial republic to build a strong economic nation.
