People saw war as inevitable, but it was unknown whether canada would fight. A lot of hesitancy in canada about going to war again. King in germany, june 1937: had sympathy for germany, [hitler] impressed me as a man of deep sincerity and a genuine patriot. I felt increasingly in the course of my stay that there were conditions in germany itself which accounted for much that had been done there which was difficult to understand beyond its borders.
