Women and mood disorders: women 3x more likely for depression, slightly more likely more bd (3:2) Roles- play fewer roles in society, less ful llment, working in marginal industries. Flow - doing something you enjoy so much you become consumed in it, Failure makes successes much more real: by stressing that bad feelings should be avoided altogether. Individualism: competition, inequality, isolation (growing gap between people: increase of substance use, at a younger age, increase in psychopathology generally, false epidemic. Diagnostic changes- easier to be diagnosed with depression, less symptoms needed to be diagnosed, more likely to go to a physician, less stigma, Other symptoms in studies can be missing. Inventories can vary from actual interviews from a mental health professional. Not the same as psychosis where distinguishing between real/ unreal is easy: christian/jewish guilt idea and happy-go-lucky africans. Believed that depression was the punishment white people got for their intellectual superiority.
