Document Summary

Culture plays really important role when critically analyzing mental illness as a concept. Shape what behaviours/thoughts/emotions we identify as a mental illness, in uence how people understand and experience mental distress, and shapes what we do about it. Dsm has list of of cial mental disorders signed by american psychiatric association. Places in west are scienti cally advanced compared to other parts of world, and we bring this knowledge (dsm) to those places. Too much culture so not a like-for-like transmission. Many criticize models of mental illness (especially the medical model) because they fail to include culture within their list of variables. A person"s symptoms are partially shaped by their behaviour and experience - themselves shaped by culture. Limit culture to related to ethnicity, any given person occupies multiple cultures at once (class, music, age, etc. ) Problematically, dsm criteria designed by a very particular subset of the population (white, male, well-educated, upper/middle class)
