Mental illness depends on the eye of the beholder. Mental disorder are characterized by their effect on: thought. Mood most mental disorders will affect all three areas. Spiritual problem (possession, problematic relationship with god) Most common way of thought is chemical imbalances in the body i. e. neurotransmitters (serotonin). Concrete manifestation and can be proven through science. Some psychiatrist believe it"s not concrete; it is a problem in living) Naomi wolf feminist writer; higher rates of anorexia is primarily the result of social pressures. Mental illness is just like any other illness, biological; lesions, viruses, genetics, causing malfunctions in the brain. Something that is rooted in a person individual brain. No clear science as to what a mentally ill brain looks like versus a mentally healthy brain; there is disagreement. Focuses on the mind; the mind is a nebulous abstract concept. One way of dealing with this is talk-therapy, psychotherapy rather than drugs.
