Mental illness is not a precisely defined thing. What defines mental illness changes over time. Mental disorders are characterized by their effect on: thought, behaviour, mood. Some disorders only affect one of these elements, others are felt in multiple areas: this is what makes other disorders differ from one another. A spiritual problem (possession, problematic relationship with god: act strangely, hard for people to understand, not a dominate way of thinking in canada, but in other parts of the world. A balance problem (yin/yang, bodily humours: cant hold them, but feel them exist. A somatic problem (ibn-sina, psychopharmaceuticals: physical problem in the brain, physical manifestation. A personal problem (moral failing, problems in living: some people may think that addiction = personal failing. A problem of consciousness (psychoanalysis: internal conflicts in the mind and we need to become aware of those things and be conscious about the events in the past and by bringing them to light, we feel better.
