One or more major depressive episode without mania. Five + symptoms during two week period. Diminished ability to think or concentrate, indecisiveness. Persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia)- chronic, but less severe than mdd. In previous dsm versions, depression had the following note: *does not include people who have recently lost a family member, friends; mourning* This allows for greater professional autonomy or widening the boundaries of illness artificially inflating the number of people with depression. Mental health experts use their expertise to give their professional advice. Some culture"s mourning last many months, or a year. Women are 3x more likely for depression, slightly more likely for bd (3:2 ratio) Stressful life events, especially childhood diversity (social structure) Higher rates of depression in each successive generation and younger onset. 10x more likely to become depressed than our grandparents. In 1960, average age for the first depressive episode was thirty; now less than fifteen. 10% of global disability owing to depression.
