We cannot understand abnormality without making reference to culture. Theorists have debated the extent to which psychiatry can truly be considered cross- cultural and universal. Some assume cross cultural portability of psychiatric theory and practice. Others are devoted to advancing psychiatric anthropology as a scholarly discipline. Mental illness truly exists in a dedicated culture. Mental illness is deviance from a specific set of cultural values and norms which may or may not derive from the brain. Transcultural aims to tackle the points of disagreements. Can psychiatric knowledge be globalization or should it be remained and tied to a specific time and place. There are many ethical and moral challenges. Psychopharmaceutical is a one size fits all model as it targets the brain, therefore crossing many cultural barriers. Critics: remains highly biased toward the euro-american ideas - the americanization of mental illness . Globalization of mental illness works to set western values throughout the world.
