Mental state in where there is a break from reality. Use terms such as episodes when talking about psychosis: discrete period of time where thinking is shaped, changed altered from psychosis. Examples: schizophrenia, md w psychotic features, certain types bd, schizoaffective disorder, delusional disorder, etc. Way we understand is with a lot of disagreement. Disease implies medical model, physicians: assume occurs at cellular level, has a cause, treatment, physical problem with the body, problem found in brain different than problem of the mind. Postmodernist perspective: do understand that reality isn"t as clear cut as it appears, some extent there are different interpretations on what makes up reality. World health organization: calls schizo a disorder rather than a disease because ambiguity. Divided into symptoms that are (acute) positive and (chronic) negative: negative because understood as deficits. Not clear cut and defined entities, lead into other disorders. Often frightening but not always: hearing voices.
