HLTHAGE 1CC3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Hypochondriasis, Body Dysmorphic Disorder, Trichotillomania
Document Summary
Historically, both ocd and ptsd belonged to anxiety disorders, sharing core feature (anxious distress). Force us to ask questions about how we separate one disorder from another. Etiology: ptsd and ocd often result from traumatic events or episodes, compulsions often follow trauma. First shell shock then combat fatigue after wwii now ptsd. Are these all the same thing: not the same thing. One rare example of cause actually being mentioned: need to have experienced a traumatic episode. New to chapter on trauma and stress-related disorders in dsm-5. War experience, victims of violence, industrial accidents, likely candidates: doesn"t develop overnight sometimes months pass, can"t occur simply due to exposure via tv. Flashback: hearing sounds/smelling things from the event, children: re-enact the certain episode through dolls or something. Play may be repetitive in a way to resolve it. Might actually feel like you"re somewhere else back in the scene of the incident.
