HLTHAGE 1CC3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Shell Shock, Combat Stress Reaction, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
Document Summary
Historically, both ocd and ptsd belonged to anxiety disorders, sharing core feature (anxious distress) Similar sense of unease, same physiological sensations experienced. Not an insignificant thing , it says to us how we deal with these experiences , how different disorders relate to each other. Force us to ask questions about how we separate one disorder from another. Medical model encourages us to have different diagnoses. Ptsd and ocd often result from traumatic events or episodes. Shell shock was originally thought to be a physiological change , they were near a bomb when it went off and it changed the way they behave. New to chapter on trauma and stress-related disorders in dsm-5. War experience, victims of violence, industrial accidents - all likely candidates. Doesn"t develop overnight - sometimes months pass. Cannot occur simply due to exposure via tv. By saying that it can happen you"re opening the door to lots of trauma.
