Mental illness: an overarching term that includes various disorders. Mental disorder: a diagnosis made by a medical professional. Patient, survivor, consumer, client are terms used by people suffering from mental illness; everyone has their own preference. An artificial division between a person and their illness can be made. People often do not want their illness to be their defining factor but they also do not want their illness to be ignored. Discusses prevalence of each disorder in the general pop. There are currently 4x the number of disorders that we had previously (1965) Tells the symptoms of the disorder but doesn"t talk about cost or treatment. You can"t get treatment unless you have a disorder recognized by the dsm: in general, to get treated you need a diagnosis. Lacks hard science; disorders are formed on a committee basis. Physicians may not have time to figure out/understand someone"s context. Some disorders are included or excluded due to social pressures.
