HLTHAGE 1CC3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Schizophrenia, Dsm-5, Social Anxiety Disorder
Document Summary
How do we define mental health and illness. Disorder is a diagnosis a specific thing. Illness is less specific: psychologically unwell, but not necessarily tied to a particular disorder. A patient is a medical term; where as survivor, consumer, client, person are not as clinical/harsh. Mention the person before the disorder: e. g. a person whit anorexia; a person who is depressed. Some reject this notion though, saying that it removes some quality to the name: e. g. I am a schizophrenic, and you can"t change a part of ones self. Now have 4 time the original number of mental illnesses. Science is advancing, but taking normal behaviors and labeling them abnormal it"s in debate. Like a cookbook: says all the symptoms but doesn"t talk about cause or treatment. Must be diagnosed with this system to be treated for a mental illness. Disorders formed on committee basis: people gather and decide what the symptoms are.
