Lecture 5 - gender, sexuality & mental health. Think about the underlying topics that connect the lecture. How can we draw links from one lecture to another. Mental illness and distress are on a continuum. Sex is different than gender, it"s biological whereas gender is environmentally developed. Hegemonic masculinity - unquestionable nobody calls maleness into question (in the past). Emphasized femininity - pink, fragile, emotional, caregiving, compliance to men etc. When people perform gender which is subordinate to these constructs, they are considered abhorrent and deviant. Real differences in wellbeing and psychopathology, based on physiological differences. Pms, post-partum depression and aspd (anti-social personality disorder in men) * empathy, cooperation, nurturing as products of female sex hormones. * rational and spatial understanding, competitive behaviour, violence as a result of make sex hormones. Differences of psychopathology is based on difference social conditions. Society can create different burdens on different people at different times.
