Document Summary

Increased interaction between neighbours: depression and anxiety both dropped, highlights social aspect of mental health, shows mental health is not an individual variable. We have a dominant way we think of mental health (categorical/disorder). If you only look at people in a category as mentally healthy or sick then you miss lots of information. Space/place particularly important when thinking beyond strict notion of mental health as an individual concern. Researchers: we underestimate extent to which mental health is affected by surroundings. This is relatively new, we used to always see mental health through an individual lens. 19th and 20th c urbanization led to drastic changes in society. Move to outskirts, not in city but not in country either: these shifts have reverberated through mental health, subject to intense debate. Economic stratification: class (education, income, culture) inversely related to almost every type of major mental disorder.
